On June 25, 2018 the Rialto Unified School District celebrated the grand opening of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station, making it the only K-12 school in Southern California to own and operate a CNG station. Design West Engineering was honored to provide electrical design engineering for this groundbreaking project.

Our work included the CNG yard power distribution, motor control center, two 4,000A switch gears, a 450 kW emergency power back up generator system, CCTV security camera system, and site lighting. Additionally, Design West provided Edison Utility Coordination for the fast fuel station.

Rialto Unified operates a fleet of 38 CNG buses, with an additional 10 to be added in the future.

The Inland Empire Community News shared that the district “will see a significant decrease in its annual fuel cost at an estimated half-a-million, while generating revenue of over $1 million through the self-serve pumps. Funding for the $4.5 million station was funded through two grants sources.”
