UC Riverside is building a greenhouse with a translucent roof that generates solar power while allowing sunlight to pass through to plants below.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that the greenhouse will serve as a laboratory to probe solar energy production, plant growth and costs of growing food in such systems.

The solar panels, whose technology was developed at UC Santa Cruz, will charge a battery in the 800-square-foot greenhouse which will create and store all the electricity the building needs without a connection to the campus electricity network.

We designed and engineered the solar photovoltaic systems, including specification for the battery system and metering instrumentation. We also provided off-grid lighting and exhaust powered by the solar panels and batteries.

We are excited to see our work with UC Riverside come to life in the coming months.
