About the Project

The Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering at California Baptist University is a top Christian engineering college in California. Having been established in just 2007, the School of Engineering program has grown very rapidly in terms of both students and in campus facility needs. This ground up, 105,000 square foot, three-story LEED Gold facility consolidate the program that was previously spread all across the campus and at multiple off-site buildings.

Design West Engineering has provided complete MEP design as well as fire sprinkler and fire alarm system designs through a fully coordinated BIM process. One unique component with this space was the school’s desire to incorporate varied and exposed MEP systems that can be used as teaching tools for the students. Because of this, air displacement, VAV, and chilled beam mechanical systems are all utilized within the building and 50% of all mechanical systems are exposed. Solar Photovoltaics have also been incorporated and placed in a convenient roof space for student teaching opportunities.

Beyond the new school building, Design West also performed necessary site and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate it, including a central plant expansion of 3 boilers, a cooling tower, chilled water pump, and condensing pump.
